Check below for important information about Skills Check

Laguna Beach Little League 2023 - Skills Check Information

Skills Check will be held on Saturday, January 21st at Thurston Middle School from 9am-5pm.

All League Age 8 to 13 year-olds (and those league age 7 who want to tryout for Double A) must participate in skills check. League Age 14 year olds do not need to participate. Double A is the start of our our 100% kid-pitched divisions followed by Triple A, Majors and Intermediate.

Note that players will not try out for a division, instead they will do a skills check in groups based on their league age and name. LEAGUE AGE IS DEFINED AS your child’s age as of August 31st, 2023.

If you have questions please see the League Age chart here:

Each individual player’s try out time is based on their League Age and Last Name First Initial.

League Age 13 (A-Z) 9:00 - 10:00 am

League Age 12 (A-Z) 10:00  - 11:00 am

League Age 11 (A-L) 11:00 - 11:45 am
League Age 11 (M-Z) 11:45 - 12:30 pm

League Age 10 (A-L) 12:30 - 1:15 pm
League Age 10 (M-Z) 1:15 - 2:00 pm

League Age 9 (A-L) 2:00 - 2:45 pm
League Age 9 (M-Z) 2:45 - 3:30 pm

League Age 7-8 (A-L) 3:30 - 4:15 pm
League Age 7-8 (M-Z) 4:15 - 5:00 pm

We expect players to show up for their predetermined time and the coaches appropriate for their age may only be available at those times to observe the players. Therefore the league greatly appreciates everyone’s support in attempting to stick to the schedule. If your player does not show up for his/her scheduled time, their potential coach may not be available to evaluate them.

Please arrive at least 15-20 minutes prior to your assigned time to allow for check in and warm up so your child will be ready to play during his or her scheduled time!

Helpful tips and reminders:

Players will be evaluated on their ability to hit, run, catch, field grounders, and throw for purposes of the draft.

All players must bring a baseball glove and helmet. Bats are highly recommended but if you don’t have one, you may be able to borrow one.

If a child is injured, he/she should attend skills check to meet the prospective managers.

VERY IMPORTANT: IF YOUR CHILD MISSES SKILLS CHECK THEY WILL NOT BE DRAFTED ONTO A TEAM. Skills check is mandatory for all AA, AAA, Majors and Intermediate players, no exceptions. Per Little League National Rules, if a player does not attend skills check they cannot be placed on a team.

Does my child need to attend skills check?  If your child is league age 8 or older as of 8/31/2023, they need to attend skills check. If your child is age 7 as of 8/31/2023, their attendance is optional but note that attending skills check does not guarantee being drafted to Double A (kid pitch)

Why is skills check needed? Per Little League International, our league is required to hold tryouts to evaluate all players for placement in our kid-pitched divisions (Intermediate, Majors, Triple A and Double A).  The skills check also helps the league and its managers in forming fair and balanced teams at each division
